Thoughts for Mindanao after Pablo
December 6, 2012
Disasters and deaths due to typhoons and man-made problems like illegal logging, illegal mining, not following disaster warnings and safety procedures happen every year in the Philippines. It is so heart-breaking and so frustrating. It seems like Filipinos are learning and responding slowly to nurture nature and think and act with other people in mind. It is true that we are a loving people but I hope that we will learn to love and take care of nature more quickly with greater concern for our lives and others'.
Overseas Filipinos like me feel so hurt and so mournful when these things happen. There is always that strong feeling to ask for charity to a devastated part of my country but at the same time, it feels so awkward or shameful to do it knowing that the big part of this yearly problem is our human nature as a people. It seems like our adventurous spirit as a people doesn't really mind if we get hurt every time.
Right now, I think it is better to act alone in charity than involve non-Filipinos in this endeavor. Let them think about it and do it.
I call on all Filipinos based-overseas, let us send our gifts of love this Christmas season to our families, friends and countrymen who are hit hard by Typhoon Bopha or Pablo in the Philippines. Let us continue to nurture the spirit of loving humanity and the environment.
The best path to safety and peace is always through education and practice. Practice what we preach in schools. Nurture love, peace and care for nature. We can do all these together as a people.
Let us save our money for buying new pillows and blankets for the winter or keep the money for christmas parties, and more, and send them all to Mindanao. People in Mindanao need all the basic necessities of food, water, clothes, blankets, and temporary shelter right now. But for the long term, they need to be moved to another place or built new homes so that they can start their life again.
The orphaned, the widowed and all those who lost their beloved ones in the typhoon will have a long way to go from now. Let us help in whatever way we can. Prayers, call for comfort, donate money or whatever they need that we have.
We are all in this together. After all, we belong to one country even if we are scattered and live far away.
Advance Merry Christmas to all!!
